(Which doesn't substitute for but can help dietary weight reduction). The most critical area of the female body after the breasts is perhaps the abdomen. During a course of dietary weight reduction, it is usually the abdominal fat that is the last to go or may be stubbornly resistant also ont he hipps and the waist. Patients complain about loosing fat from their breasts, face before any from the abdomen and thighs. Why? Who knows.
Common knowledge frequently confuses abdominoplasty with liposuction, although the two procedures are completely different. Fat can be sucked off from anywher ont he body but abdominoplasty is limited to the abdomen. Liposuction aims at removing a realtively small amount of excessive body fat. Abdominoplasty targets mainly the "apron-like" hanging abdominal wall, the result of signifficant obesity. Naturally, with this surgery weigt is also reduced and peripheral fat is suctioned off.
If someone wishes the removal of fat only from below the umbilicus, we cand do this through a small bikini-cut. Should there be an abdominal hernia, we correct this at the same time. In fact we're usually the first to diagnose such an entity. The patient may not even know about it.

With this operation we almost exclusively use a horizontal "bikini" incision. Should the excess fat be very extensive, we prepare above the umbilicus as well, pulling down skin from above and relocating the umbilicus which will end up int he same position but with a more pleasing appearance. Here, as with after other major surgeries, early mobilization, exercise, are important as defense against deep venous thrombosis. This is in the category of major surgeries, necessitating careful preoperative evaluation to asses vascular, respiratory problems, check for diabetes, varicosities, and history of previous incidences of deep venous thrombosis for these may increase surgical risks.
The result of abdominoplasty is a happier patient, daintier, prettier figure, firmer, more attractive abdomen. The incision is covered by the bikini. Like other plastic surgeries, this too results in feeling better, more self-esteem and confidence.
